About

The purpose of The Responsible Gamer is to be a place for discussion and evaluation of how to fit video games into real lives. For a long time, I personally have felt that video games have always inhabited a very "ubernerd" type of stigma that also carried (and still does carry) a leniency towards obsession.

Well, I think it's about time that we call that obsession out for what it is and start dealing with it together. There is a way to play video games - as bonafide adults living in an adult world - without falling victim to addictive/obsessive behavior that frequently accompanies. There has to be a way or a great portion of this nation is in for some tough times as very soon we will have end-of-life age people that grew up playing video games and STILL LIKES THEM.

Games are only getting more interesting, more intense, more vivid. It isn't going away, and the answer isn't to try and "quit" playing as you get older. I think that a better option is to learn to game responsibly and sensibly. This blog is for young married couples, couples with children, young people (single or no) that just want to be able to enjoy their hobby but do it responsibly.

This blog is also for the parents of current video game players. Hopefully, you can get a sense for what kind of play sessions are reasonable, what video games are better/worse for responsible gaming - based on some reviews here. Remember that although video games may have been a "pastime" of a 20-something's childhood, do not assume that the industry has stayed the same since they were a child. It's bigger. Better. There are probably video games that, if you were given the opportunity to try, would be surprisingly fun for you, too (the Wii console has picked up steam particularly with the generation of people that did NOT grow up gaming - and it's getting better).

If anyone would like to see a Responsible Gamer review of a particular video game - please feel free to leave a comment here or email me! Along with my regular blog posts on new games as they come out, I'll also do requests. :)
